In yesterday's post we looked the order of operations, prime factorization, and generating equivalent expressions. If you missed the live stream with the answers, you can watch that here. For the next five posts, we'll be spending time in the largest reporting category - computations and algebraic relationships. Today we look at the basic operations, including multiplying by a fraction.
Multiplying by a Fraction
For years and years, students have been taught that multiplication and addition are two operations that result in a larger number, either a product or a sum. In 6th grade, however, they learn that sometimes multiplying two numbers results in a smaller product. Watch the video to learn more.
Now that you've learned about multiplying be a fraction, see if you can answer this related problem.
Operations with Integers
Students have been using the four operations for years now. In 6th grade, those basic operations are expanded to include negative integers. Watch the video to freshen up on the rules of operations, such as what happens when you subtract a negative.
That wasn't so hard, was it? Now that you've learned about operations with integers, try this problem from a released STAAR test.
Multiply and Divide Positive Rational Numbers
First started in 5th grade, this standard asks students to extend their knowledge of multiplying and dividing numbers that include decimals or fractions. Watch the video below to see how it's done.
Now try your skill at multiplying and dividing with this practice problem.
Correct Answers Tonight (4/16/20) at 8:00 pm (CDT), I'll live stream from my YouTube channel to go over the answers to these three practice problems. Make sure you've already worked them out ahead of time. I can answer questions you might have in the stream chat and I'll put the recording on my channel and in this post for anyone that couldn't watch it live.
If you haven't done so already, you can subscribe to the channel and click the bell icon to get notifications for live streams and new videos that I post.
Here's the live stream with the answers and explanations.
